Zero waste: Matunga society shows way

In Lokmanya Nagar, the well is properly covered, water is pumped out, treated and used for non drinking purposes.

The Lokmanya Nagar housing society near Matunga road station in Mumbai is using water from its well for the last seventy years for its members. It is one of the best managed socieities and has won several awards.

Thought of this when I read about a parked car falling into a closed, covered well in a Mumbai suburb last week.

In Lokmanya Nagar the well is properly covered, water is pumped out, treated and used for non drinking purposes. It also recycles all the biodegradable waste in the society from nearly 150 houses in ten buildings, composts and turns into fertiliser.

There is also gentle discipline. A bell rings in the evening at 7.30 for children to go home, earlier it was 7 p.m.
